Chapter 37 – Jake

Somehow, Jake and Damien managed to follow a straight line even in the dark, and within a couple of minutes Daisy was right in front of them, the only thing blocking their path being the branches they’d used to hide her from passing traffic.

Jake went around to the far side while Damien pulled the closest branches away from the wheels.

Once everything was moved, Jake opened the back door and used the shelf to climb up on the roof.

“Pass the bags up but leave some of the water bottles to travel inside.” He instructed his brother. “It’ll keep it colder for drinking tonight or tomorrow.”

As Damien quietly passed the bags up, Jake spread them as evenly and as flat as he could.

“Can you pass me the sheet and the ties out of the back?” He called down when he’d finished. “I want everything packed down tight to keep it protected from the wind and dust.”

He watched Damien rummage in the back of the land rover before pulling the sheet out. As he handed it up to him, Jake noticed that his brother seemed distracted.

“What’s going on in that head of yours?” He asked abruptly. “You’re acting like a wet weekend!”

“What? Nothing!” Damien frowned at him.

“Nothing? Really?” Jake snorted. “Pull the other one. It’s got bells on it, which’ll help the others track their way here.”

Damien looked up at him for a whole minute before speaking.

“What do you think of Gemma?” He wondered, and Jake had to hold back his laughter.

“As a doctor, or as a person?” He grinned. “Or do you have another measurement in mind? Maybe as a female companion for you?”

“What? No!” Damien shook his head before conceding. “Well, maybe…! I mean, she’s something special, isn’t she? Gorgeous, intelligent, funny… like she’s totally hot, right?”

“She’s all of those things, it’s true.” Jake nodded. “But she’s also on her way back to America, while we’re stuck out here for God knows how long before we head back to the UK. You’re going to be spending a few days with her, and then a year or so halfway around the world. It’s not really the time to be thinking of starting something, is it?”

Damien stared at him for a while longer before finally shrugging.

“Nah, I suppose not.” He shrugged. “It’s a shame though. She’s kinda perfect for me, ticking all my boxes. And I think a toyboy would be good for her, after all this time living in the middle of nowhere, practising celibacy!”

“Yeah, not that you’d know the first thing about it, but I don’t think celibacy is something you need to practise. You just do it! And if my eyes don’t deceive me, and they generally don’t, I think she’s already got someone aiming to help her end that particular drought.” Jake grinned. “Kris seriously seems to have a thing for her, and Gemma doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of an allergic reaction to him either, so I think that’s a more likely match. You may as well save your energy.
